In this episode, the Naked Business Coach John Millar talks about the concept of a business VISION and MISSION, and introduces the process of strategic planning to create it.

VISION

So when you begin the process of strategic planning, VISIONING has to come first. Ask yourself what is our preferred future and do the following things:

  1. Draw on the beliefs, mission and environment of the organization
  2. Describe what you want to see in the future
  3. Be very specific to each organization or division within your business
  4. Make sure that at all times you are positive and inspiring
  5. Don’t assume that the system will have the same framework as it does today.
  6. Be open to dramatic modifications to counter organization, methodology, techniques, facilities and the like

Incorporate your beliefs to be encompassed by everybody in the organization. You beliefs must meet your organizational goals, as well as your community goals

MISSION STATEMENT

Your mission is the statement of purpose and function. Your mission statement must be:

  1. Future-oriented and portray your organization as it will be as if it already exists
  2. Focus on one common
  3. Must be specific to your business and not just simply generic
  4. Must be short – not more than 2 to 3 sentences.

THE BENEFITS OF VISIONING

Visioning will help you break out of boundary thinking, alert stakeholders to needed change and promote interest and commitment. It will encourage and build confidence, build loyalty through involvement, and will result in efficiency and productivity.

VISION KILLERS

  1. Tradition
  2. Fear of Ridicule
  3. Complacency of some of the stakeholders
  4. Fatigue leaders who are just too tired to make a change
  5. Short-term thinking and naysayers

Sit down and have a closer look at what you can do to assimilate some of these information and put it in place specifically for your business. So that you can have a much clearer VISION and a MISSION that will take you to success.

TRANSCRIPT: PODCAST EPISODE 3
Title: Creating a Business Vision
Date Published: August 12, 2015
Running Time: 5:43 minutes

Hi this is John Millar, the Naked Business Coach, stripping business back to the bare basics.

Today I want to talk to you about a new concept, for some, and an old one for others. And that is creating a VISION and a MISSION for your business. I don’t mean something that looks pretty and sits in a plaque up in the wall. I’m talking about creating a true vision.

So when you begin the process of strategic planning, VISIONING has to come first. When visioning the change, ask yourself what is our preferred future? And be sure to do the following things:

  1. Make sure that you draw on the beliefs, mission and environment of the organization.
  2. Describe what you want to see in the future?
  3. Be very specific to each organization or division within your business
  4. Make sure that at all times you are positive and inspiring
  5. And don’t assume that the system will have the same framework as it does today. Your business does change.
  6. Be open to dramatic modifications to counter organization, methodology, techniques, facilities and the like

What are some of the KEY COMPONENTS for your VISION?

First and foremost I think you actually need to incorporate your beliefs to be encompassed by everybody in the organization. You beliefs must meet your organizational goals, as well as your community goals. Your beliefs are a statement of your values. Your beliefs are public, visible decorations of your expected outcomes. Your beliefs must be precise and practical. Your beliefs will guide the actions of all involved. Your beliefs reflect the knowledge, philosophy, and actions of all. And finally, your beliefs are a key component of the strategic planning.

Once you’ve clarified your belief you must build on them to define your MISSION STATEMENT, which is a statement of purpose and function. Your MISSION STATEMENT draws on your BELIEFS STATEMENTS.

Your MISSION STATEMENT must be future-oriented and portray your organization as it will be as if it already exists. Your MISSION STATEMENT must focus on one common purpose. Your MISSION STATEMENT must be specific to your business and not just simply generic. Your MISSION STATEMENT must be a short statement. Not more I’d recommend them 2 perhaps 3 sentences.

Here’s an example Mission Statement that we actually put in place here. “By providing quality business re-education, we empower individuals and businesses to become caring, competent and responsible corporate citizens who value education and progress as a lifelong process.”

So what are the benefits of VISIONING the processes and outcomes of VISIONING may seem vague and superfluous, but the long term benefits are substantial. VISIONING will actually help you to break out of your boundary thinking. It provides continuity and then voids the stutter effect on planning fits and starts. It will also alert stakeholders to needed change and promote interest and commitment. It will promote laser-like focus and encourage openness to unique and creative solutions. It will encourage and build confidence, build loyalty through involvement, and will result in efficiency and productivity.

As you engage in the visioning process make sure that you are aware and alert for the following VISION KILLERS:

  1. Now you don’t want to change things for the sake of change. But don’t hold on to things just because we’ve always done it that way.
  2. Fear of Ridicule. Stereotypes of people condition roles and governing counsels.
  3. Complacency of some of the stakeholders.
  4. Fatigue leaders who are just too tired to make a change.
  5. Short-term thinking and naysayers.

What I need you to do is take the time after this podcast to sit down and have a closer look at what you can do to assimilate some of these information and put it in place specifically for your business. So that you can have a much clearer VISION and a MISSION that will take you to success.
