Date Published: December 28, 2015

Running Time: 08:26 minutes

Hi, this is John Millar. I’m the Naked Business Coach bringing you a bite-sized piece of business wisdom in stripping business back to the bare basics. Now it’s really that time of the year when you start to hear jingle bells and sleigh bells and everything else. And I want you to start and think about some of the 10 best new years resolution that you can make within your business. So let me take you through to the 10 that I’ve come up with and see if you can come up with some more as well.

  1. Make sure that you resolve to stay brutally optimistic. I want you to see the opportunity in every single difficulty and anticipate the most favorable outcome of every situation. Whatever you look for, that’s what you’ll find. So we can get better or we can get bitter; it all depends on the lessons we draw from each experience. Optimism is, let’s face it, is a lot like electricity — very little happens without it. Know this truth: you have all the resources you’ll ever need to handle all the challenges you’ll ever have. In true emergencies, the true you will really come to the fore and emerge.
  2. I want you to resolve to identify the most powerful benefit you offer to the people around you and then get off your backside and deliver it. “The purpose of life, is a life of purpose.” And I want you to ask yourself, What’s yours? Where are you actually investing your personal energy: self-preservation or adding value to others? Here’s the well-being paradox: If you’re only concerned about yourself, then let’s face it, you cannot take care of yourself. Only by helping others, can you truly succeed.
  3. Resolve to pump-up your own personal vitality. In the game of life, it’s not about who’s right, it’s about who’s left. The said statisctics is that over 60 percent of us are more than 36 years of age. Yes, I’m one of those. The real currency of the new century is not cash. It’s vitality. It’s the ability to keep going every day of every week of every month of the year with vigor and verve. All you are to the people around you is a source of energy, and you cannot give what you don’t have. The sad part again is ninety percent of all adults do no physical exercise at all. More than half of us are overweight and probably obese. A third of us still stupidly smoke. So, this year, resolve to enhance your physical, emotional and mental vitality. Take this small step. Believe me you’ll first start to actually amaze yourself, and then you’ll amaze everyone else.
  4. Resolve to be habitually generous. Now success is not something you just pursue. It’s something you attract by what you become. The more you give of yourself, I promise you, the more favors you attract from others. People have a deep-rooted drive to give back so resolve to search for ways to contribute to other people.
  5. Resolve to go on a mental diet. You all have the sayings “Sticks and stones may break your bones, but words can scar you for life.” Now it’s humans, not elephants, who never forget. So resolve to use the language of conciliation, not the language of confrontation. Avoid the temptation to just vent your negativity on others. I don’t care what the situation. Instead, use positive words that express your joie de vivre and connection with others.
  6. Resolve to be a global citizen – fully open to the cultures and influences of others. There’s been a direct correlation between personal well-being and the openness to other peoples’ ideas and cultures. If someone’s got a different point of view from you, well they’re probably right as well. There are many ways to be right, there are no absolutes anymore, so welcome different opinions. Become a one-person champion of plurality. Not only will you make lots and lots of new friends, but you’ll also gather multiple reference points to help you resolve personal challenges and professional challenges.
  7. Resolve to take control of your destiny. I don’t want you to be so busy trying to make a living that you forget to make a life. Decide who you want to be and what you want to achieve and then stride boldly towards your vision. Let’s face it, your most precious human commodity today is confidence.
  8. Resolve to increase your human connectedness. The person with the best connections wins. We’ve all heard that. The wider your network, the more opportunities that you generate. It’s often not just what you know but who you know. It’s all about trust. It’s all about profile. It’s all about your presence in the minds of the people around you that actually matter. So invest at least 10 percent of your time broadening your sphere of influence to meet other people. Connect other people to the networks within your network. This is your chance to really cross-pollinate and utilize each other’s potentials. When you are with others, make every encounter whenever possible a pleasurable one. When you listen, truly listen. And make sure you burn away your fears and your rejections from being influencing on others.
  9. Resolve to increase your creativity by letting go of the familiar. Nothing is as far away as yesterday. How sad is that? So try to see the world through fresh eyes every single day. The author Salman Rushdie wrote, “Every year is the Stone Age to the year that follows it.” Listen to your own intuition and follow your own instincts. They’ll tell you what to actually do before your head has had a chance to figure it out. You are in your own way a Picasso or Einstein at something. Discover what that something is and then develop it to the maximum of your capacity and potential.
  10. Resolve to be you because let’s face it, everyone else is taken. You and I are at our best when we’re being absolutely authentic. We’re at our best when we’re being positively spontaneous, because that’s when all our energy is being invested in the task at hand or just as importantly if not more so, with the person in front of us. We live in a hyper-connective world, we cannot afford to second-guess ourselves. Success in this century is all about speed. So act now, because if not now, when?
