Today and for the next few episodes, John will take us through a series of lessons inspired by the magnificent man Napoleon Hill.

WHO IS NAPOLEON HILL?

Napoleon Hill spent most of his life studying the most successful entrepreneurs in American history. He analyzed men like Ford, Edison and Carnegie at length. He concluded that success followed predictable and distinct patterns of behavior. He suggested that all men and women have similar options open to them, and he argued that the great success and achievement was available to any and all who choose to follow a certain set of requirements which he then spelled out in many of his books.

GOING THE EXTRA MILE

An important principle of success in all walks of life and in all occupations is the willingness to go the extra mile. The rendering of more and better service than that which is one is actually paid and giving it in a positive mental attitude. Search whatever you will and wherever you will for a single sound argument against this principle. I promise you won’t find it nor will your find a single instance of enduring success which was not attained in part or greatly by supplication.

The benefits of developing the habit of going the extra mile, include:

  1. Provides opportunities for self-advancement making one actually indispensable in many different human relationships
  2. Leads to mental growth and physical skill and perfection in many forms of endeavor
  3. Enables you to profit by the law of contrast since the majority of people do not practice to this habit.
  4. Lead to the development of positive pleasing mental attitudes which are essential for enduring success.
  5. Allows you then to develop a keen imagination because it inspires one to consistently and continuously seek out new and better ways of rendering service
  6. Develops the important quality of personal initiative, self-reliance and courage
  7. Serves to build the confidence of others and your integrity, and aids the mastery of the destructive habit of procrastination.
  8. Develops definiteness of a purpose, ensuring one against the common habit of aimlessness.

INCREASED COMPENSATION

There is still another great reason for following the habit of going the extra mile – it gives only the logical reason for asking for increased compensation. If a man or a woman performs no more than that for which they are being paid, then obviously he is receiving all the pay to which he is entitled. You must render as much service as that for which you’re being paid in order to maintain your source of income regardless of how you earn it. But have you got the privilege of rendering a surplus of service? Which means accumulating a reserve of credit of goodwill and to provide a just reason for demanding more pay, a better position or both.

In our societies, anyone can earn a living without the habit of going the extra mile and many people do just that. But the economic security and luxuries available are only available to those individuals who make this principle a part of their philosophy of life and live by it as a matter of daily habit.

Running Time: 06:48 minutes

Hi guys and girls! It’s John Millar here again, the Naked Business Coach, bringing you bite-sized pieces of wisdom. Now, today and for the next four episodes I’m going to be taking you through a series of lessons that I’ve learned, inspired by the magnificent man Napoleon Hill. Now I’m not sure whether you’ve read his books but let me tell you a little bit about him.

Napoleon Hill was clearly recognized as the architect of the philosophy of success. He was a pioneer and an original thinker. Many books and articles have copied his ideas but he remains the absolute master. Of all the great human accomplishments in the 20th century, the judgment of history will inevitably rank the commentaries of Napoleon Hill amongst the very best of them.

The following is part one in a multi-part series which outlines some of Napoleon Hill’s greatest success philosophies. Please read these with the intent of employing the key principles on your life and then impart this wisdom directly to your team.

Many people actually disregard this principle and you can’t do at the same and enjoy the benefits of the fruits of enduring success. The advantages of the habit of going the extra mile are definite and understandable. Let me explain some of them.

The habit that brings the individual the favorable attention of those who can and will provide opportunities for self-advancement tends to make one actually indispensable in Manu different human relationships and that therefore enables him or her to command more than the average compensation for your own personal services. It leads to mental growth and to physical skill and perfection in many forms of endeavor thereby adding to your own capacity. It enables you to profit by the law of contrast since the majority of people do not practice to this habit. It will lead to the development of positive pleasing mental attitudes which are essential for enduring success.

The attitudes of habits in going the extra mile allows you then to develop a keen imagination because it’s a habit which inspires one to consistently and continuously seek out new and better ways of rendering service to your fellow men. It will always develop the important quality of personal initiative. The habit of going the extra mile develops self-reliance and courage. It serves to build the confidence of others and your integrity, and it aids the mastery of the destructive habit of procrastination. It develops definiteness of a purpose, ensuring one against the common habit of aimlessness.

Any practice of philosophy which deprives a man of privilege of going the extra mile is unsound and doomed for failure for it is obvious that this principle is the stepping stone of major importance by which an individual may receive compensation thru extraordinary skill and experience and education. And it is the one principle which provides the way of self-determination regardless of what occupation, profession or calling that that individual may be engaged in.

In our societies, anyone can earn a living without the habit of going the extra mile and many people do just that. But the economic security and luxuries available are only available to those individuals who make this principle a part of their philosophy of life and live by it as a matter of daily habit. Every known rule of logic and common sense forces you to accept this as true. And even a cursory analysis of men in the higher brackets of success – men and women –will prove that it’s absolutely true.

This has been the first part of hobbits of going the extra mile and I look forward to bringing you more soon. This has been John Millar, the Naked Business Coach, bringing you bite-sized pieces of success and stripping business back to the bare basics.
